India and West Indies are involved in an ODI series at the moment. The first game is happening currently at the Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad. With the seniors rested, Shikhar Dhawan was appointed as the captain while Ravindra Jadeja was nominated as the vice-captain. Ravindra Jadeja was ruled out of the first two ODIs and hence, the management has named a new vice-captain. Shreyas Iyer will be the vice-captain for Team India for the first two games. There were plenty of reports stating Ravindra Jadeja would be unavailable for the first ODI encounter. Hence, there was curiosity as to who would be Dhawan‘s deputy in the captaincy department. In the end, it was Shreyas Iyer who was given the nod.
It has to be noted that Iyer is not in the best form, at least, in overseas nations. He is struggling against pace and there are some doubts regarding his place in the 2022 T20 World Cup. In this scenario, it is a big surprise that Iyer has been given vice-captaincy. Of course, this decision will not decide if Iyer will hold a place in the team or not. Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see how the management will handle him from now on.
