Team India’s exit from T20 World Cup: Yes or No?

After their crushing defeat against New Zealand on Sunday, team India has reached a very critical point in the ongoing T20 World Cup. There is a probability that we might not see our dear Men in Blue in the semi-finals.

As soon as New Zealand scored one of their easiest victory against team India, there were headlines that Kohli & Co. is out of the semi-finals & hence they are out of the T20 world cup. Well, in hindsight, that’s not the case. Team India is currently standing at the exit door, but they haven’t left yet.

There are still chances for them to make it to the semi-finals & hence the ship hasn’t sunk in yet for them. There are different situations where India can still make it to the semi-finals.

First of all, they will have to win all the three upcoming matches & not only win, but they will also have to win them with a big margin. They will have to improve their net run rate. India is currently placed at the 5th position in the point table for Group 2 & yes, it is a surprise that they are below Namibia. Even Namibia scored a win in group B against Scotland.

Secondly, New Zealand is scheduled to play their upcoming fixtures against Namibia, Afghanistan & Scotland. For India to make it to the semis, one of these three teams will have to score a win against New Zealand. If this happens, New Zealand will have two losses in their kitty which are equivalent to India’s losses in Group 2.

Team India will have to focus on NRR

According to the rules, only two teams from a group can make it to the semi-finals. From group 2, with two wins, Pakistan is way ahead of all the teams & they are surely making it to the semi-finals. Now, in case of a tie between New Zealand & India, the comparison will be done between the Net Run Rate & this is the only reason India will have to score three big wins in their upcoming fixtures.

Things are completely not in the hands of team India. There might be a scenario that New Zealand might score a win on all the upcoming fixtures, in that case, India will have to catch a flight back to the country. The upcoming days definitely look strange & extremely difficult for the Indian cricket team.
