“Ideally he should open with Rohit in the 2023 Cricket World Cup”, Twitter reacts as Shubman Gill has the highest average by an Indian in ODI in 2022

At the second one-day international between India and New Zealand, played on Sunday, November 27 in Hamilton, Shubman Gill scored 45 runs (unbeaten) off 42 balls. The rain ended play with the Men in Blue on 89/1 after 12.5 overs, meaning the opening batter was unable to play a more significant knock.Β

During his innings, Gill hit four fours and a six. The opener for the Gujarat Titans has looked comfortable in both of his games despite the relatively seamer-friendly circumstances. He hit a half-century in the first ODI.

Since making his ODI debut in 2019, the 23-year-old Gill has played in 14 games, scoring 674 runs at an average of 61.27. In addition, he has played in 11 Tests, where he has amassed 579 runs.

For the current series against New Zealand, Team India is missing many key players, including Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Virat Kohli. India, meanwhile, has already began getting ready for the 2023 ODI World Cup, which will be held in the country. The series openers are Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill, but India’s World Cup squad selection committee will have a tough time choosing between the four players next year. However, senior India cricketer Dinesh Karthik went one further and identified the player who is unquestionably a starter among the four.

Ex-Indian head coach Ravi Shastri thinks that the young batsman, Shubman Gill, has “something royal about him,” and he has a lot of respect for the Indian team’s opener.

β€œIt is great to watch him play. There is something regal about him. He is a quality player and he’s going to be around for a long time (decade’s time),” Shastri said onΒ Prime Video.

Shubman Gill has the highest average by an Indian in ODI in 2022: 72.5
