“I once played a loose shot against Pakistan and thought my career was over,” Virat Kohli relates the catch drop by Arshdeep Singh to his own mistake in Champions Trophy 2009

Arshdeep Singh bowled well for India in yesterday's game against Pakistan, but he dropped a catch at a crucial juncture

Virat Kohli, like many other current and former Indian cricketers, has also backed the young fast bowler Arshdeep Singh after the southpaw dropped an easy catch of Asif Ali in the 18th over of the game against Pakistan in the super 4 round of the ongoing Asia Cup. That catch drop proved to be a massive factor in the game.

Asif scored a six and a four in the next over of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Pakistan required just 7 runs in the last over to win the game, which they eventually scored even though Arshdeep bowled a great last over.

When Virat Kohli, who was addressing the post-match press conference, was asked about the mistake made by Arshdeep, he said that it happens with young players that they end up making mistakes under pressure sometimes, but that mistake doesn’t take away the fact that Arshdeep is a very talented bowler.

Relating Arshdeep’s mistake to a mistake he himself made right at the start of his career, Kohli recalled during one of the games of the Champions Trophy 2009 against Pakistan, he played a very loose shot off the bowling of Shahid Afridi.

According to Kohli, that mistake bothered him so much that he almost had a sleepless night. Kohli revealed he kept looking towards the ceiling of the room till late in the night because, after that dismissal and the kind of shot he had played, he thought it might turn out to be the last game of his career and he might never get an opportunity again. But, it didn’t turn out that way. Kohli played the next game against West Indies and scored a half-century.

Arshdeep Singh is likely to be a part of India’s playing XI for the game against Sri Lanka

According to Kohli, the current atmosphere in the dressing room of team India is very good as well and since the atmosphere is positive, it will help Arshdeep recover from this setback.

India has to play another crucial Asia Cup game against Sri Lanka tomorrow and it will also take place in Dubai, where the game against Pakistan took place. Arshdeep Singh is likely to retain his spot in the Indian XI for the game against Sri Lanka.
