Gautam Gambhir thinks this Indian veteran should captain Delhi Capitals next season

Delhi Capitals have preferred young captains in the last few years

Gautam Gambhir has come up with a very strange suggestion that the Delhi Capitals should go into the next IPL season under the captaincy of Ravichandran Ashwin.

Delhi Capitals have played the last three seasons under the captaincy of young captains Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant and although they have lost in the playoffs all three times, they have given no hints that they want to shift from their policy of playing under the young captains and working with a long-term plan.

But, many people felt during the playoffs this season that Rishabh Pant’s inexperience in captaincy was evident during the crunch moments of the game and if a couple of decisions were taken differently during the playoffs, the results could have gone either way for Delhi Capitals.

Rishabh Pant captained Delhi Capitals well during the league phase of IPL 2021

Interestingly, Rishabh Pant was actually very good as captain during the league phase of the tournament and in most of the league games, he captained as if he had a lot of experience of leading a side at the highest level. But, in the playoffs, there were a couple of Pant’s decisions that were questionable.

Gautam Gambhir, who himself has been a very successful captain for KKR in the past, suggests that it might sound bizarre, but he would actually want Ravichandran Ashwin to be considered for the captaincy of Delhi Capitals next season.

“Look, I’m one of his (Ashwin’s) biggest fans and he’s one of the best spinners in the world. If you look at the overall line-up, it may be a bizarre call maybe and only I can think about this… but if I was there, I would like to make him the captain of Delhi Capitals next year,” Gambhir said about Ashwin while speaking on ESPNcricinfo.

Ashwin is a veteran of Indian cricket and has plenty of experience of playing top-level cricket in all conditions and all situations. He has also captained Kings XI Punjab in the IPL in the past and although KXIP couldn’t reach the playoffs in either of the two seasons Ashwin captained, the off-spinner caught a lot of eyeballs with his imaginative captaincy.

I write a bit on cricket and I am more interested in technical and tactical side of the game, rather than bravado.
