ENG vs IND 2022: Former India pacer RP Singh thinks that England’s ODI model of being aggressive from the start may not be the best.
After the 2015 ICC World Cup, the team changed the way they played cricket with white balls. This style of cricket was part of that change. With brute force from the start, England has been able to rack up huge totals and record huge chases during this time.
But the plan went wrong when the team led by Jos Buttler faced a good Indian seam attack at The Oval when it was cloudy. They gave up after scoring only 110 runs in just 25.2 overs and lost the game by 10 wickets.
ENG vs IND 2022: What did RP Singh say?
RP Singh said on Cricbuzz that England needs to take some time to look at the conditions:
“England will have to change a few things about how they do things. You can’t think about getting a score of 350 right away; you have to look at the conditions first and then make changes.”
England is one of the best white-ball teams in the world, and even though they played India with a second-string bowling unit, they still had a strong XI. But none of their batsmen could handle how well Jasprit Bumrah bowled.
What did Pragyan Ojha say?
During the same meeting, former India spinner Pragyan Ojha said that the team shouldn’t make any changes, even though they lost badly in the first ODI.
“Before this series, England had just scored 500 runs against the Netherlands. Even though England is not a strong bowling unit, they went into the game with a lot of confidence. Even though they lost the first ODI by 10 wickets, now is not the time to think about making changes,” Ojha said.
Ojha said that he thinks most of the current team will make it to the 2023 ODI World Cup in India.
“Players on good teams always receive backing. This team has a lot of skill and is well-balanced. Most of this team will go to the World Cup in 2023,” Ojha added.
England is the defending World Cup champion because they won the 2019 tournament while Eoin Morgan was their captain.
In Jos Buttler’s first ODI as full-time white-ball captain, England lost by 10 wickets at home for the first time. In every way, India was better than the hosts, giving them a 1-0 lead in the three-game series.
India and England will play in the second ODI at the Lord’s Cricket Ground later today, July 14.
