Babar Azam can break this record of MS Dhoni in T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia

MS Dhoni is currently the highest run scorer in the history of T20 World Cup as captain

MS Dhoni is one of the best white ball captains ever in the history of white ball cricket, if not the best, but one of his records can be broken by the current Pakistani captain Babar Azam in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia.

MS Dhoni, under whose captaincy India won the first ever T20 World Cup held in South Africa in 2007, went on to captain India in a total of 6 T20 World Cups and after their title triumph in 2007, India managed to reach the final of T20 World Cup 2014 and the semi-final of T20 World Cup 2016 under Dhoni.

In the T20 World Cup of 2012 as well, India was eliminated because of their net run rate (NRR) despite winning 4 out of their 5 group games. MSD currently holds the record of scoring the most number of runs in the T20 World Cup history as captain, as he scored a total of 529 runs in 33 T20 World Cup games while captaining India.

Babar Azam, on the other hand, has captained Pakistan in only one T20 World Cup so far and this will be his second World Cup as captain, but in the first World Cup where he captained Pakistan last year in Dubai, Babar scored a whopping 303 runs in just 6 games at an average of more than 60.

Babar Azam is 226 runs behind MS Dhoni at the moment

Babar is currently 226 runs behind the overall tally of MS Dhoni in the T20 World Cup, which seems quite a big gap, but the batting positions of Babar and Dhoni are completely different. While MSD used to bat lower down the order at no. 6 or no. 7 for India and always had a high-risk role, Babar bats at the top of the order, and in every game, he has the opportunity to face the maximum deliveries from the Pakistani batting unit, if he doesn’t get out early.

The gap of 226 runs is not that big a gap to cover for Babar Azam if he stays in form for a major part of the ongoing tournament in Australia and at the end of the tournament, he might end up breaking MSD’s record.
