“As a kid, I grew up watching tri-series”, Indian captain Rohit Sharma talks about the future of bilaterals

In recent months, there has been a lot of talk about bilateral tournaments. The entertainment these games are offering is becoming less despite the ICC giving context with the World Test Championship and the ODI Super League. Now, the Indian captain Rohit Sharma had an interesting comment to make. In the below section, we take a look at what Rohit Sharma had to say about the future of bilaterals in cricket.

The future of bilaterals looks bleak

There was a time when bilaterals used to be a major form of engagement for the fans. However, with the advent of T20 leagues, that has changed. With three formats involved, there is at least one important ICC event that gets scheduled every year.

Hence, the relevance of bilateral tournaments is becoming less. A few experts have already been giving their opinions on how to revive the same.

Rohit Sharma talks about triangular and quadrangular tournaments

After the second ODI against England. Rohit Sharma talked about the topic. When the Indian skipper was asked about the future of bilaterals, he said, “I do think it is important but it can be managed in a better way for sure. The scheduling has to be done with some space as well. ”

He continued, “You have to play bilateral series, there was a time when we were kids, I grew up, I watched a lot of tri-series or quadrangular series, but that has completely stopped. I think that can be a way forward so that there is enough time for a team to recover and get back.”

It has been a while since tri-series tournaments have happened. Maybe, ICC can look at this format to draw more eyes to the non-ICC events. One of India’s next assignments will be the Asia Cup. More than two teams would be part of this tournament. It needs to be seen how the fans would receive this competition.
