IPL 2023: On May 28th, after almost two months of play, the 16th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 will come to a close. Ten different franchisees have been in a heated competition over the last two months, with some faring better than others. Many of the batters in the competition had outstanding performances, allowing them to claim victory. In some games, teams scored less than 140 runs, while in others, they scored well over 200.
Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill, two of the best chasers in the world, both have three hundred so far this year. The brilliant batting of Suryakumar Yadav, Cameron Green, Venkatesh Iyer, Harry Brook, and Heinrich Klaasen was highlighted by a century from each of them. In addition, both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Prabhsimran Singh, neither of whom had ever been capped, scored hundreds in the same season of the league. Virender Sehwag selected his top five batters from the competition based on their impressive showings.

Three of the five players on Sehwag’s list scored centuries this season, while both KKR’s Rinku and CSK’s Dube put out outstanding efforts for their respective clubs, contributing to the victories in several close games. Notably, the former India cricketer didn’t include Kohli or Gill but did identify other up-and-coming stars.
Virender Sehwag informed Cricbuzz that he had chosen only five batters, likening them to the Pandavas. He clarified that he didn’t select many openers as they often receive ample opportunities. The first batter that immediately came to his mind was Rinku Singh. Sehwag mentioned that there was no need to inquire about the reason, as it was unprecedented for a batter to single-handedly win a match by hitting five consecutive sixes.

The middle-order batters
As for the second middle-order batter, Sehwag named Shivam Dube. He highlighted Dube’s impressive record of 33 sixes and a strike rate exceeding 160. Sehwag acknowledged that while the past few seasons may not have been extraordinary for Dube, this year, he approached the game with a determined mindset to come in and unleash sixes.
He further added that the third player he would select is an exceptional opener. He felt compelled to mention this player due to his brilliant batting performances. The name that came to his mind was Yashasvi Jaiswal. Following Jaiswal, he mentioned Suryakumar Yadav, known as SKY, noting that he chose Yadav because he had been struggling with form. In the IPL as well, Yadav had a slow start but eventually found his rhythm.
As for the last spot, he mentioned that there were numerous options and he could select anyone by tossing a coin. However, he decided to go with another middle-order batter named Klaasen. Sehwag highlighted Klaasen’s exceptional ability to handle both spin and pace, a quality rarely seen in foreign players.
In other news from the event, the Gujarat Titans defeated the Mumbai Indians by 62 runs in the second qualifier of the IPL 2023 on Friday to set up a championship match against the Chennai Super Kings. In their attempt to score 234, GT was bowled out for only 171 runs thanks to Mohit Sharma’s five-wicket haul. Earlier, GT reached 233/3 in 20 overs, with Shubman Gill scoring 129 runs off 60 balls.
