When it came time for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 auction, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) made history by purchasing Ben Stokes for their highest bid. Stokes was signed by the four-time victors for the sum of INR 16.25 crore. As the current captain of the English Test team, Stokes is being seen as a future leadership contender in Chennai. Former New Zealand all-rounder Scott Styris, though, thinks the English great might replace MS Dhoni as captain in the next 16th season of the league.
Without a question, Stokes is one of the most sought-after all-rounders in international cricket. IPL fans have seen Stokes’ batting and bowling prowess on several occasions. But can he really lead Chennai Super Kings?
The commentator for Jio Cinema, Styris, speculated that Dhoni will immediately hand over the leadership to Stokes, as he had done with Ravindra Jadeja after the last tournament.
What did Scott Styris say about Ben Stokes replacing MS Dhoni as the Chennai Super Kings captain?
“I think so, I think he’ll be the leader. MS Dhoni tried to give up the captaincy, and he hasn’t been playing cricket much outside of the IPL. It’s just a chance for MS Dhoni to pass the baton to the next person. I think they will do it right away, so the answer is yes. The captain will be Ben Stokes,” Styris said.
Dhoni, who may be finishing his career with CSK this IPL season, must now find his replacement. Last year’s decision to promote Ravindra Jadeja to that position backfired. Jadeja stepped down as captain in the midst of the season, requiring CSK to bring back Dhoni.
If the Super Kings believe Stokes has leadership potential, they may wait until he has settled in before making him captain.
