Virat Kohli’s world record remains unbeaten as Babar Azam’s Pakistan bows out of T20 World Cup 2021
Virat Kohli holds the world record of scoring most runs ever in a single edition of T20 World Cup
As Pakistan bowed out of the T20 World Cup 2021 suffering a 5-wicket defeat against Australia in the semifinal, the Pakistan skipper Babar Azam also fell short of breaking Virat Kohli’s world record of being the highest run scorer in a single edition of the T20 World Cup.
Virat Kohli had scored 319 runs in 6 matches in the T20 World Cup of 2014 which was played in Bangladesh and India had made it to the final there under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. Babar had a great opportunity to get past that record and get himself into the history books if Pakistan played the final this year in UAE as he was only 17 runs away from breaking Virat’s record, but it wasn’t to be.
Babar, who was captaining Pakistan in a World Cup for the first time ever, scored 4 half-centuries in 6 games he played in this T20 World Cup and even in the two games he couldn’t get his fifty, he still got Pakistan off to a decent start. The 27-year-old finished his tournament with 303 runs as Pakistan’s campaign was stopped by the Kangaroos in the second semifinal of the tournament on Thursday.
Jos Buttler could also have had an opportunity to get close to Virat Kohli’s world record
As things stand right now, it seems Virat Kohli’s world record might go unbeaten in this World Cup as two of the leading run-scorers of the tournament, Babar and Jos Buttler, won’t take any further part with Pakistan and England both eliminated. Jos Buttler might have been in with a chance to get close to Virat’s record as well, if he had played the final, as he also had 269 runs in 6 innings to his name.

However, there is still one player active in the tournament who might break Virat Kohli’s world record if he plays one of the innings of his life in the final. The Australian opener David Warner, who will take part in Sunday’s final against New Zealand, is currently standing 4th in the list of leading run scorers in the T20 World Cup 2021 with 236 runs in 6 games and he is 84 runs away from breaking Virat’s record.
