Fans on Twitter reacted hilariously after England thrashed Sri Lanka by 4 wickets to find themselves in the semi final of the T20 World Cup 2022 and knock Australia out of the tournament. While some took jibe at the Aaron Finch-led side for not qualifying, few even extended their support towards them and blamed rain for their decline.
England thumps Sri Lanka to book their berth in semi-finals
England Cricket Team has become the second side to qualify for the semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2022. Their win over Sri Lanka means, defending champions Australia have been knocked out of the tournament.
Asked to bowl first, England had no answers to the onslaught by Sri Lanka openers Pathum Nissanka (67) and Kusal Mendis (18) as they smashed English pacers all over the ground.
But after that, the Jos Buttler-led side put pressure on the Sri Lanka batters and made batting difficult for them. Only Nissanka seemed in good touch whereas the rest all the batters struggled and on account of Mark Wood’s 3/26, England restricted Sri Lanka to a total of 141 runs.
Chasing the target, Jos Buttler (28) and Alex Hales (47) came out all guns blazing and scored 75 runs for the opening partnership. But after that England tumbled in the middle and was left tottering at 111/5. But Ben Stokes held his nerves well and remained unbeaten on 44 to take his side into the semi final and eliminate Australia.
