Shreyas Iyer joins an elite list to become second fastest Indian to reach 1000 ODI Runs

In the opening game of a three-match ODI series against West Indies at Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain (Trinidad), India’s Shreyas Iyer completed his 1000 runs in the 50 overs format of the game and became the third fastest player to do so, innings-wise.

Put on to batting first, captain Shikhar Dhawan missed out on a well-deserved century by just 3 runs and had to walk back to the pavilion when Shamarh Brooks took an outstanding catch at backward point. Going hand in hand with Dhawan, Iyer amassed 54 runs from just 57 balls which is his 10th fifty in ODIs, and went on to complete his 1000 runs in just 25 innings he has yet played in this format. His performance is under scrutiny by many greats of the game and the BCCI selectors, Shreyas Iyer has been able to stand tall with his head high when yesterday he joined an elite list of players.

Fewest innings to 1000 ODI runs for India

Players who have taken the fewest innings to score a thousand runs in the fifty-over format of the game are none other than

Virat Kohli – 24 innings

Shikhar Dhawan – 24 innings

Shreyas Iyer – 25 innings

Navjot Singh Siddhu – 25 innings

K L Rahul – 27 innings

Yesterday, Shreyas overtook KL Rahul to bang this record on his name by taking 2 innings less than the wicketkeeper-batsman to achieve this feat.

Talking about the ongoing series wherein Shreyas reached this milestone, India was able to win the match by the barest of the margins i.e., by only three runs when Mohd Siraj was the standout with the ball. Now being 1-0 up in the three-match series, India is up to an amazing contest ahead against the West Indies.
