BCCI might launch women’s IPL in March next year, existing IPL franchises likely to be on board

There have been rising demands of women's IPL from leading women cricketers in the last couple of years

The Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) in India has reportedly chosen March as one of the spots in the cricketing calendar where they can launch the women’s IPL next year.

There are two reasons associated with it. One is the fact that the men’s IPL will start in April and the inaugural edition of the women’s event if it is scheduled right before the men’s IPL, will get a lot of attention and hype automatically. The second reason behind it is that no overseas men’s T20 league generally takes place in this window, apart from the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Two new men’s T20 leagues that have been launched recently, the UAE T20 league and the CSA T20 league, both will run simultaneously in the January-February window, and then PSL will take place in the February-March window, a window in which the women’s IPL might be launched as well.

Existing IPL franchises will be given the first opportunity to buy Women’s IPL franchises

It has been reported by ESPNcricinfo that the existing franchises of the men’s IPL will be given the first right of refusal as far as buying the ownership of a women’s IPL franchise is concerned. The BCCI secretary Jay Shah was in a conversation with Press Trust of India (PTI) a couple of months back where he revealed that he has seen serious interest from the stakeholders in the women’s edition of the IPL.

A couple of franchises, Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals have already said that they would be interested in women’s IPL whenever it’s launched and when CSK owner N Srinivasan was asked about it in one of the interviews last year, he also hinted that he would be interested.

It remains to be seen which other IPL franchises will be on board in the women’s IPL and apart from the existing IPL franchises if some other corporate houses will get involved as well.

I write a bit on cricket and I am more interested in technical and tactical side of the game, rather than bravado.
