‘I don’t believe it’s appropriate for me to be pleading’- Phil Simmons rues the decision of West Indies players to not play international cricket

Phil Simmons, the head coach of the West Indies T20 squad, has remarked that the absence of the finest T20 players from the national side is detrimental to the team. Simmons said that players have a variety of alternatives available to them and that administrators cannot compel players to play for the West Indies even if they ask them to do so.

The Caribbean nations have not yet determined their top eleven players for the next Twenty20 World Cup, which starts in two months. Both Andre Russell and Sunil Narine are currently playing in the Hundred in England to further their careers. While this is going on, Oshane Thomas, Evin Lewis, Sheldon Cottrell, Fabian Allen, and Roston Chase are all having difficulties with their fitness.

What did Phil Simmons say about West Indies players?

Simmons expressed his disappointment that the T20 players would not be participating in the next T20 series against New Zealand. According to a quotation from ESPN Cricinfo, the 59-year-old man said:

“It is painful. It cannot be stated any more plainly than that. But what options do you have? I don’t believe it’s appropriate for me to be pleading with individuals to play for their own nations. If you really care about representing the West Indies, I have no doubt that you will make yourself accessible. It’s simply a fact of life that people now have access to a wider variety of destinations, and if they decide to spend their time elsewhere rather than in the West Indies, that’s their prerogative.”

On August 11, the inaugural Twenty20 International (T20I) versus New Zealand will take place in Kingston. West Indies will need to bounce back from their 4-1 series defeat against India recently. They will also need to sort out their squad ahead of the ICC World T20 2022 in Australia.
