Punjab Kings retained Mayank Agarwal and Arshdeep Singh before IPL 2022. Mayank was named as the skipper, too. However, the player did not deliver with the bat last season. Moreover, with Jonny Bairstow doing well as the opener, Mayank had to play in the middle order. This role was not suitable for him and would anyways not be viable in the long run. Mayank’s price tag was also high considering his current form. Therefore, Punjab has decided to release him to the auction pool.
With lesser pressure, Mayank can strive to return to form. There would be a number of franchises willing to install him at the top of the order. Therefore, it would not be a surprise if he goes for a big sum at the IPL 2023 Auctions. Apart from Mayank, PBKS is also set to release Odean Smith and Shahrukh Khan. The franchise has set eyes on the likes of Ben Stokes and hence, they want to free up funds.
