Punjab Kings, like many other IPL franchises, took a number of good decisions ahead of the 2023 IPL season. They firstly chopped off former head coach Anil Kumble and former captain Mayank Agarwal and after that, they also bought Sam Curran for a record 18.25 Crores. Coincidentally, Anil Kumble was present in the commentators panel during the 2023 IPL mini auction alongside Chris Gayle, Eoin Morgan and Scott Styris and that led to a pretty funny exchange.
As we all know, Chris Gayle was a part of the Punjab Kings’ squad till IPL 2022 and back then, Anil Kumble had benched him. Now that the franchise has chopped off Anil Kumble too, Gayle used the opportunity to bash Anil Kumble in a hilarious banter.
“I might be on the unlucky side…or should I say (looks at Kumble) What should I say?”. Not only Anil Kumble but Eoin Morgan and Scott Styris started to laugh at this too.
Anil Kumble replied to that by saying “We both are on the same page”.
“I’ve been on the unlucky side a few times. Anil is not there now. He was a part of it but he chopped and changed me, that’s a reason why he is sitting next to me now. They chopped and changed him. You know what I’m saying? Hopefully, it can be a better cause this time around!” Chris Gayle added.
While Anil Kumble is without a team in the Indian Premier League 2022, Punjab Kings’ former captain Mayank Agarwal was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad for a whopping price of 8.25 Crores. Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad were the main two teams bidding for him and SRH got him in the end.
Apart from Sam Curran, the only other big name that PBKS could buy in the 2023 IPL mini auction was Zimbabwe’s all-rounder Sikander Raza.
