There is no doubt about the fact that India suffered a great deal in the 2022 T20 World Cup due to their underperforming openers. Both Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, who are known to be great players, are currently suffering from a bad phase, and their inability to score runs was one of the main reasons why India could not reach the final in the tournament. It is thus being said that at least KL Rahul, who has not performed well in many of his last tournaments, should be replaced by an able alternative. And Indian youngster Shubman Gill is being deemed the no. 1 pick for the Indian selectors to do so.
Shubman Gill has been one of India’s most consistent and underrated openers in the last couple of years. He became a household name in the Indian cricket scenario ever since the 2017 U-19 World Cup, in which he was the highest run scorer. He was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders after that, and the rest is history. He made his debut for Team India in no time.
Last year in the IPL, he was one of the best performers for the Gujarat Titans, and that is why he was selected for India’s second T20I team that is being captained by Shikhar Dhawan. However, it is high time that he is brought into India’s main team for major tournaments.
He is capable enough to represent India across all three formats. He has already done a great job in the Test format, and now it is probably time for him to shine in the T20I and ODI formats.
Ravi Shastri (former Indian coach) has recently said about him: “Shubman Gill has good work ethics; he works so hard and with quality; he is going to be around for a long time.”
He must be selected in India’s squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup, and for that, he needs to play in some of the ODI series before that.
