Former England Ashes star takes over as new head coach of Afghanistan cricket team with immediate effect

Afghanistan national cricket team's next assignment is the tour of Ireland and it will be a stiff challenge

The former England top order batsman Jonathan Trott, who has been a part of England’s Ashes-winning teams both home and away, has been appointed the chief of the coaching staff of the Afghanistan cricket team.

Jonathan Trott has worked as a batting consultant in the English setup both at the emerging level and with the senior team in the past, but this is the first time that he has landed the job of a head coach at the international level.

The opportunity for Trott to become the head coach of Afghanistan emerged under unfortunate circumstances because the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) had first given the job to the former England left-hander Graham Thorpe, who was also the batting coach of England on their recent Ashes tour.

But, Thorpe is currently going through serious health issues and is unable to take up the job, which left the head coach position vacant in the Afghanistan set-up. The Afghanistan Cricket Board then approached Jonathan Trott for the job and he accepted the offer.

Afghanistan cricket team will gain a massive amount of knowledge from Jonathan Trott

The Afghanistan cricket team is expected to gain a massive amount of knowledge from Trott, not only in terms of batting but also in terms of attitude while competing against the big teams because Trott has been there and done it all himself at the highest level of the game.

Jonathan Trott, after being appointed, said that this is a chance for him to make a difference with one of the most exciting bunch of cricketers in world cricket.

Afghanistan cricket is lacking infrastructure in their country for various reasons at the moment, but the raw talent coming out of there is as promising as the raw talent coming out of any other country. With Trott’s experience, the Afghanistan fans can hope that the raw, young players of Afghanistan will be fine-tuned and will perform consistently in international cricket.

I write a bit on cricket and I am more interested in technical and tactical side of the game, rather than bravado.
