Suresh Raina is one of the few two players to have captained the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. He had been an important member of the CSK squad since 2008, but the Chennai-based franchise decided against signing him for the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League.
Nicknamed Mr. IPL, Suresh Raina registered himself for the IPL 2022 Auction at a base price of INR 2 crore. While he made the cut to the final list of auctioned players, quite shockingly, none of the franchises raised the peddle when his name came up at the auction.
Suresh Raina did have an off-season in the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League, but he is one of the highest run-getters in the league’s history. Most importantly, he is one of the most experienced players, who could have helped the youngsters of any team. But none of the teams thought in that direction.
Speaking on the official YouTube channel of the Chennai Super Kings team, the franchise’s CEO Kasi Viswanathan explained why the team did not bid for Suresh at the mega auction. Here’s what he had to say:
“It was very difficult for us, not to have Raina but at the same time, you should also understand that the team composition depends on the form and kind of team which any team would like to have.”
Suresh Raina was always a part of the Chennai Super Kings team when they qualified for the playoffs
As mentioned ahead, Suresh Raina was an integral part of the Chennai Super Kings team. The only time he missed an IPL season was in 2020, and in that season, the Super Kings did not qualify for the playoffs.
The Chennai Super Kings have formed a strong squad for IPL 2022, and it will be interesting to see how they perform this time around.
