Aaron Finch retires from the international cricket

In what has been the latest development, Australian batter Aaron Finch announced his retirement from international cricket on Tuesday (7th February). He ended his career on high as he was longest reigning Australian captain in T20Is.

Finch led the side from the front as he had the most runs by an Australian in Men’s T20Is (3120) followed by the highest individual score in Men’s T20Is (172) and most fours (309) and sixes (125) by an Australian in Men’s T20Is.

Finch won the first-ever T20 World Cup for Australia in 2021 as he led his side beautifully and scripted history. He will go down as one of the finest white-ball Australian cricketers to have played the game of cricket.

He, notably, announced his ODI retirement in September 2022 to focus completely on T20Is. But following Australia’s poor campaign in T20 World Cup 2022, where they failed to qualify for the semi-final, Finch called time on his career.

Finch was a great servant of Australian cricket as he represented the team in 5 Tests, 146 ODIs and 103 T20Is, scoring over 8000 runs across formats with 19 centuries.

Speaking on his retirement, he said: “Realising that I won’t be playing on until the next T20 World Cup in 2024, now is the right moment step down and give the team time to plan and build towards that event.”
