ICC T20 World Cup 2022: 2 changes Australia might make for their next game against Sri Lanka

Australia would have wanted to start their T20 World Cup campaign on a bright note. However, they lost their opening game to New Zealand by 89 runs. This massive loss makes it difficult for them in the tournament. Nevertheless, the focus will be on winning the next games and keeping their prospects in their hands. The hosts will next face Sri Lanka in Perth on October 25th. A few changes could be made by the management. Here, we take a look at two changes Australia might make for their next game against Sri Lanka in ICC T20 World Cup 2022.

1) Cameron Green for Marcus Stoinis

Cameron Green recently replaced Josh Inglis in the T20 World Cup squad for Australia. Against India, the all-rounder was in top form and hence, he got this chance for the main event. Marcus Stoinis has been unable to make an impact with the bat in recent games. His bowling is also not that effective.

On the other hand, Green is a better bowling option than Stoinis and his current batting form is also good. Australia would want to be fearless at the start with the bat. By having Green open alongside Warner, the southpaw can afford some time to settle into the innings. Aaron Finch might have to play in the middle order but he did well recently in that role.

2) Steve Smith for Mitchell Marsh

Mitchell Marsh is a top player for Australia but for tactical reasons, he could be sidelined for the next game. Sri Lanka will have spin wizards Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana dominate in the bowling department. Mitchell Marsh is not known for his batting against spinners. Hence, Dasun Shanaka could trouble Marsh by bringing his spinners into the attack.

On the other hand, Steve Smith is a brilliant player of spin. The No.3 role currently occupied by Marsh also suits him better in a T20 XI. Moreover, after the failed batting show against the Kiwis, Australia might need someone calm and experienced in the middle. For these reasons, Steve Smith for Marsh is one of the changes Australia might make for their next game against Sri Lanka in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022.
