The former Indian allrounder Yuvraj Singh has expressed his disappointment at the fact that he didn’t get the kind of support from the Indian team management that MS Dhoni got from 2017 onwards.
MS Dhoni stepped down as the captain of India in white ball cricket towards the end of 2016, but he wasn’t dropped from either ODI or T20I squad of India till 2019. He went on to play the ODI World Cup of 2019 and then took a break for a year before announcing his international retirement in August 2020.
According to Yuvraj Singh, who expressed his thoughts on Sports18 recently, some of the other legendary Indian cricketers didn’t get the kind of support that MS Dhoni got towards the end of his career. When as a senior player, one does not get the support and knows that he can be dropped after any series, he can’t properly focus on his performance on the field.
Yuvraj is of the view that when Virat Kohli took over the captaincy and Ravi Shastri became the coach again in 2017, they gave Dhoni all the support that he needed, but in Indian cricket, support is given only to some specific players and not to everyone.
Yuvraj Singh was picked in the Indian squad after Virat Kohli became India’s white-ball captain
After Virat Kohli was appointed the successor of Dhoni in white-ball cricket, he had brought Yuvraj Singh into the set-up as well and both Yuvraj and Dhoni played in India’s middle-order in the Champions Trophy of 2017, but after a debacle in the final of that tournament against Pakistan, Yuvraj was dropped, while Dhoni retained his place in the squad.
Initially, Yuvraj was removed from the squad because of an injury problem, but he was never brought back into the squad after that and he finally announced his retirement from international cricket in 2019. Yuvraj and Dhoni, at the peak of their careers, formed one of India’s most successful and destructive pairs in white-ball cricket.
