Quinton de Kock has announced his retirement from ODI cricket after the 2023 ODI World Cup. Interestingly, despite being just 30 years old, he has already retired from Tests. It would not be a surprise if many other high-profile names followed the South African after the 2023 ODI World Cup. ODI is a format that’s slowly losing relevance. Apart from the ICC events, there is not much to look forward to. To ensure peak fitness for the T20 tournaments, a few players could completely skip this format. On that note, here, we take a look at four players who might shockingly follow Quinton de Kock into retirement after the 2023 ODI World Cup.
1) Wanindu Hasaranga
The Sri Lankan all-rounder retired from Tests a few weeks ago. Considering his fitness issues, he might quit the ODI format, too. It also makes sense from his perspective.
He is a wanted man across T20 leagues on the globe. To make himself available, Hasaranga might consider skipping ODIs to give himself time and fitness. He can anyways compete for Sri Lanka in the T20 World Cup, which happens once in two years.
2) Josh Hazlewood
Josh Hazlewood is also one of the players who might shockingly follow Quinton de Kock into retirement after the 2023 ODI World Cup. Hazlewood is one of the best all-format pacers in the game right now. However, he could follow the route of Ben Stokes in the future.
In fact, Australian management might prioritize national duties for the talented pacer. While he cannot be dropped in Tests, his presence is needed in T20Is, as well, especially because Starc and Cummins are not the best these days in this format. Therefore, the cricketer can hang up his boots in this format after the upcoming ODI World Cup.
3) Ravindra Jadeja
When it comes to India, Jadeja could take the tough decision to retire from ODIs. Age is catching up on him and for the sake of his fitness, he might have to sacrifice the ODIs. He is needed in Tests for India and in T20Is, his inconsistency might leave Axar Patel with a better chance of sealing the spot in the playing XI.
However, he has quite a few years of IPL cricket left and for that reason, Jaddu cannot leave T20Is. ODI cricket may not be his priority since the next mega-event will not happen in India. Jadeja might not be preferred and hence, it would be best for him to step aside from the format.
4) Reece Topley
Reece Topley is one of the players who might shockingly follow Quinton de Kock into retirement after the 2023 ODI World Cup. Topley is one cricketer who has been extremely unlucky when it comes to his fitness. If not for his frequent injuries, he would have been rated even higher right now. This is also not allowing him to completely dominate in the T20 format.
Since there will be competition for spots in the England ODI side in the future, Topley can focus on the T20 format. He can enrol himself in more T20 leagues across the globe. Hence, he could shockingly move on from the 50-over format.
