3 Players With Most IPL Matches As Captain Without Winning The Trophy

Captaincy in IPL is a challenging task. Team building happens on the auction table, and there are plenty of dynamics involved. So, a captain can only lead a team that his management gets him from the auctions. However, we have also seen the likes of Shane Warne, who did exceptionally despite having an underwhelming squad in 2008. In this article, we take a look at three players with the most IPL matches as a captain without winning the trophy so far.

1) Virat Kohli – 132 Games (Royal Challengers Bangalore)

Of course, it is Virat Kohli who tops this list of players with the most IPL matches as a captain without winning the trophy so far. In 132 games that he has been the captain of RCB, Virat has managed to win just 62 games. It is an underwhelming record considering Virat is the captain of the Indian Team.

However, the lack of squad balance is also something that has troubled Virat. He has always had a weak bowling attack, but that is not an excuse for finishing in the bottom half for a few straight seasons. That said, the team is showing good form in recent seasons, and there is hope that Virat would lift the trophy.

2) Virender Sehwag – 53 Games (Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings)

Barring the one game that he captained for Punjab Kings in 2015, Virender Sehwag‘s leadership duties have mostly been at Delhi. He led them in the first season to the playoffs and that has been the best he has offered his home franchise.

The former Indian opener won 29 games as the captain and for his experience, he surely could have done better. Just like his batting, Sehwag’s captaincy decisions were unorthodox at times and a few of them did not come off.

3) Sachin Tendulkar – 51 Games (Mumbai Indians)

Sachin Tendulkar was never known for his captaincy. For India, too, he did not enjoy a good record. The same repeated in IPL. For the first few years, he was the obvious choice to lead Mumbai, although the likes of Harbhajan Singh stepped in when he was injured.

In 51 encounters, Sachin won 30 games as captain, but could never help Mumbai win the trophy. It was in 2013, under Rohit Sharma’s leadership, that Sachin won his first IPL trophy. In that season, Rohit had replaced Ricky Ponting as the captain midway through the campaign.
