South African international Temba Bavuma made the headlines after he announced his decision to step down as T20I captain just a few days ago. Cricket South Africa (CSA) also named Temba Bavuma as the new Test captain.
Temba Bavuma made up his mind to step down as T20I captain in the wake of disappointing results in the recent games. Bavuma’s exit from the T20I captaincy post gives an opportunity for someone to lead the T20I team.
With the captaincy slot being vacant, there are multiple candidates who are ready to take the role wholeheartedly. Now, in this article, let’s take a look at the three players who can replace Temba Bavuma as South Africa’s new T20I captain.
1. Aiden Markram
South African cricketer Aiden Markram is one of the candidates who can replace Temba Bavuma as Protea’s new T20I captain. For the record, Aiden Markram has led SunRisers Eastern Cape to the inaugural edition of the SA20 Championship. Interestingly, Temba Bavuma played under Markram’s captaincy in the T20 competition.
2. Quinton de Kock
Quinton de Kock might have retired from the purest format of the game but he is still available to feature in One-Day Internationals and Twenty20 Internationals. He has played 77 T20Is in his career, scoring 2156 runs including 14 fifties and he knows pretty much about the game. Quinton de Kock is one of the players who can replace Temba Bavuma as T20I captain.
3. Faf du Plessis
Faf du Plessis is the most-experienced South African cricketer. However, the veteran cricketer has already fallen out of the selectors’ radar and it remains to be seen if he will be brought back into the mix. Faf du Plessis possesses a truckload of leadership experience under his belt. If the current coaching staff allows Faf to play T20 cricket again, he would surely return as the captain.
