Steve Smith has had one of the biggest turnarounds in the history of the sport. He started out as a pure spinner but has gone on to become one of the best batters that the game has seen. In fact, for Australia, he is the best in this generation. It was in 2010 against West Indies at the MCG that Smith made his Test debut. Interestingly, all the Australian players who were a part of that game, barring Smith, have already retired. Smith bowled 9.5 overs in the game, giving away 78 runs while picking 2 wickets. The 2023 ODI World Cup will be an important tournament for Steve Smith. It might be his last big event and hence, would want to win it. On that note, here, we take a look at two players you might not know played in Steve Smith’s debut ODI match in 2010.
1) Clint McKay
At one point in time, Clint McKay was actually a key part of Australia’s pace attack. He was a tall bowler and extracted bounce and troubled many batters. McKay played a total of 59 games in the ODI format.
He took as many as 97 wickets during this time. His economy was under 5. However, his form dropped soon and with better players emerging, McKay had to give way to them.
2) Ryan Harris
Ryan Harris is one of the players you might not know played in Steve Smith’s debut ODI match in 2010. When it comes to swing bowling, Ryan Harris was a fine exponent and hence, enjoyed a good run with Australia. In his 21 ODIs for Australia, he collected a total of 44 wickets.
The right-arm pacer had to suffer injuries at key stages in his career. After he hung up his boots, Ryan Harris took up coaching and has been a part of the IPL also in this new role.
