Commentary over the years have evolved and as we now look at a new bunch of commentators from all over the world, one of the most dominant nations in cricket, Australia has started producing a few of their own too.
Being one of the most swashbuckling franchise tournaments across the globe, IPL has given rise to countless new applications and has allowed commentators of the new generation to take over the mic, may it be from India or may it be from Australia. From young Indian domestic cricketers to former Australian captains, IPL 2023’s latest panel has it all. Here are two players who have captained Australia in the past and are now a part of the IPL commentary panel.
#1 Steve Smith is a new addition to the IPL commentary panel
Smith captained Rajasthan Royals in the 2020 season before being released by the Royals in 2021. The Delhi Capitals added him to their squad for the 2021. He however went unsold in the auctions in 2022 and now is without a team in the IPL. But who says you can’t be a part of the IPL if you aren’t playing?
Now Smith has been included in the IPL Commentary panel of Star Sports for this season of IPL. And the manner of his commentary debut has caught the imagination of the audiences worldwide. The 33 year old appeared as a hologram for the tournament opener on Friday. Smith remained at home in Sydney and was beamed virtually to the Star Sports studio in India. It will be interesting to listen to his commentary this season.
#2 Aaron Finch makes his debut with the mic
Finch recently announced retirement from all forms of international cricket, after leading Australia to 2021 T20 World Cup Victory and also was the part of the ODI World Cup winning side of 2015. He too has been included in the commentary team for this season.
He has played for 9 IPL franchises and was even asked to name his teams in a chronological order in the IPL commentary panel by his peers to check his memory and he successfully replied. Finch began his IPL career in 2010 with the Rajasthan Royals, and then toured different IPL teams to finally end his IPL career with the KKR in 2022. Finch is already having fun with his mates in the box and the audiences are surely in for a treat!
