“There might be two editions of the IPL in every calendar year”, Aakash Chopra talks about the next objective for IPL

Before IPL 2022 started, many had doubts about the tournament because two new teams were added. Some experts opined that it would lead to an overdose of the game. However, IPL 2022 turned out to be a big success. Now, a few have even started talking about hosting two editions of IPL every year. In this article, we take a look at Aakash Chopra talks about the idea of two editions of the IPL every year.

Two editions of the IPL each year?

It needs to be noted that IPL 2021 ended in October and the next edition started in March 2022. There was as little as six months gap in between and despite that, IPL 2022 gave a fresh experience to the viewers. The same gap was there between IPL 2020 and the first phase of IPL 2021 and even then, there were no complaints.

Now, ESPN Cricinfo hosted an interaction that talked about the way forward for IPL and the possibility of having two seasons every year. In this talk, former cricketer Aakash Chopra said, “I actually foresee there might be two editions of the IPL in every calendar year.” Aakash said that in the natural progression of a tournament, the league will end up having two seasons every year. He conceded that IPL is heading firmly in that direction. The likes of Ravi Shastri also were of a similar view.

The way forward for cricket

IPL surely is the No.1 when it comes to T20 cricket. The tournament has a massive fanbase and it is also commercially beneficial for all involved. Fans are anyways invested in the tournament. Hence, it might not be a bad idea to have two editions of IPL. However, for that to happen, bilateral in the T20I format must take a big hit. It all depends on ICC and the relevant boards to decide the way forward for the game.
