“Thank you Kane Williamson!” – Twitter reacts as Team India qualify for WTC Final after Sri Lanka’s defeat

Indian national cricket team etched its name into the record books after it became the first team to make it to the ICC World Test Championship Final for the second consecutive time.

Earlier, India qualified for the WTC Final under Virat Kohli’s captaincy in the first cycle. However, India lost to New Zealand in the final as Kane Williamson and Co beat India by eight wickets to win the inaugural edition.

After suffering a painful defeat in the final showdown, India did pick up lessons and played pretty well in the second cycle. They are currently engaging in the Border Gavaskar Trophy series.

India won the first two games of the BGT series before losing to Australia in the third game. The fourth and final Test is being held at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Team India qualify for the WTC final after Sri Lanka’s defeat

Earlier, Australia qualified for the WTC final by beating India in the Indore Test by nine wickets at Holkar Cricket Stadium. Meanwhile, India were tasked with the huge responsibility to win the fourth Test if they were to qualify for the WTC Final.

However, at the same time, the Sri Lankan cricket team locked horns with New Zealand cricket in the two-match Test series. Since Sri Lanka lost the first Test against New Zealand, Team India have automatically qualified for the WTC Final irrespective of the result in the fourth Test.

The fourth Test is perhaps heading for a draw and India are highly likely to win the BGT series by 2-1. Notably, they have already retained the Border Gavaskar Trophy for a record fourth-straight time.

On the other hand, New Zealand beat Sri Lanka by two wickets in a thriller encounter at Hagley Oval, Christchurch. Kane Williamson scored a match-winning unbeaten 121 (11 fours, 1 six) in the second innings and helped the team ace the run chase on the final day of the first Test.
