Former Pakistan cricket team bowler Shoaib Akhtar recently opined that the Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Shreyas Iyer has the potential to become the captain of the Indian cricket team in the future. Iyer has done a splendid job as captain in the Indian Premier League.
In the last four seasons, he was with the Delhi Capitals. He was the full-time captain of the franchise in 2019 and 2020. In both seasons, DC made it to the playoffs. And in fact, during the 2020 season, they qualified for their first-ever IPL Final.
Now, Shreyas Iyer has joined the Kolkata Knight Riders and taken over the reins of the team. Shoaib Akhtar is impressed with Shreyas Iyer as a captain. The Kolkata-based franchise are at the top of the points table right now with three wins in four matches.
During an interaction with Sportskeeda, Akhtar discussed Iyer’s performance and said:
“Iyer is not putting pressure on the IPL with his captaincy, he is making a serious case for Team India’s captaincy. He should continue to score runs and lead the team well, and I believe he will become a big brand in the near future. He wants to cement his place in the Indian team and lead it as well.”
Shoaib Akhtar says Shreyas Iyer and co. should not give up on Ajinkya Rahane
During the same interview, Shoaib Akhtar said that the Kolkata Knight Riders have made a good decision to back veteran Indian opener Ajinkya Rahane. Akhtar felt that KKR should not give up on Rahane even if he disappoints in some matches.
Rahane started the IPL on an impressive note against the Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium, but he has not matched that performance after that. The right-handed batter will play against his former team Delhi Capitals in the next game.
