T20 WC 2021 Winning Captain Aaron Finch Explains Why He Went Unsold In IPL

The IPL 2022 Mega Auction happened last weekend in Bengaluru, where more than 200 players earned contracts from 10 franchises. While multiple teams needed a captaincy option, none of them bid for Australian T20I captain Aaron Finch, who won the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 as skipper.

Fans should note that Finch has played for the most franchises in the Indian Premier League history. He started his career with the Rajasthan Royals and then played for the Delhi Daredevils, Mumbai Indians, Pune Warriors, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Gujarat Lions, Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

From the eight teams that joined the IPL in the first season, the Kolkata Knight Riders, the Deccan Chargers and the Chennai Super Kings are the only ones that have not signed Finch in the league so far.

Finch has done well in T20 cricket, but he has not been at his best in the IPL. Barring his match-winning performances for the Gujarat Lions, there have not been too many memorable IPL moments involving the Australian skipper.

There are so many top-order players over there that can do a really good job: Aaron Finch

During a recent appearance on SEN’s Dwayne’s World show, Aaron Finch spoke about himself going unsold at the IPL 2022 Mega Auction and said:

“There are so many top-order players over there that can do a really good job. Probably the hole that is missing in a lot of teams around the world is that number five, six, seven. Real power hitter.”

Many members of the cricket universe would agree with Finch because even the likes of Jason Roy, Alex Hales and Evin Lewis have not received consistent chances in the IPL despite being among the top openers in the world.

It will be interesting to see if any franchise decides to sign Finch as a replacement player later in the season.
