England and Pakistan are currently taking on each other in the much anticipated final of the T20 World Cup 2022. In the match that is being played at the Melbourne Cricket Stadium, England won the toss and opted to bowl first. It turned out to be the correct decision as the Paks were able to make only 137 runs in the first innings which can be considered to be easier chasable if England do not mess things up.
While the fans of both these nations are eagerly watching the final, some cricket analysts have questioned the relevance and fairness of this match saying that none of them deserved to be playing in the final and were just lucky.
Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif, for instance, tweeted today saying: “Pakistan vs England: Were they the best two teams in this World T20 or the luckiest? Just asking”.
While it is true that neither Pakistan or England were that great in their respective Super 12 matches, they both registered brilliant victories in their semi-final matches by a big margin. And this is what a Pakistani journalist said to Mohammad Kaif in reply to his tweet.
“Lucky teams don’t win with 10 wickets at hand in a semi final”: a Pakistani journalist said.
Pakistan’s success had a lot to do with luck though. South Africa missed out on some crucial points as their match was washed out and they lost their last match against Netherlands. If that wouldn’t have been the case, Pakistan wouldn’t have qualified for the semis to begin with. It thus points out a big flaw in the current structure or format of the T20 World Cup.
The correct term to use would be ‘clinical’. Pakistan and England might not have performed that well in the Super 12 but they performed when it was needed.
