Team India is regularly playing T20I cricket in recent months. This is leaving the management with many options before the mega-event later this year. Since India had a terrible run in the previous event, the management will be careful while selecting the squad for the next edition. Many well-known names might not play in the 2022 T20 World Cup
India is slightly moving away from the idea of selecting cricketers based on reputation. That said, some established players are also getting their share of opportunities. R Ashwin was a surprise selection for the West Indies T20I series. He did well in the first game but Parthiv opined that if India is playing only two spinners [they played three in the first game] for the next match, Ashwin might have to sit out.
Speaking on Cricbuzz, Parthiv said, “I see Bishnoi playing ahead of Ashwin in the next game.” He even claimed that Ashwin might not make it to the T20 WC squad. The former cricketer added, “I don’t see Ashwin playing the T20 World Cup, to be honest. would want variety in Kuldeep Yadav, Bishnoi, and Chahal. Wrist spinners give that attacking option in between. Ashwin doesn’t give you that.”
Not just Ashwin, some other popular names might miss the mega event in Australia. The likes of Shreyas Iyer could also find it hard to get selected for the World Cup squad.
India has a plethora of choices for each department
Meanwhile, thanks to the depth of Indian Cricket, the management is establishing a strong core with multiple choices for each position. Going forward, this would help the squad.
India is also playing games regularly, which is further aiding the management. If not for the run of games in recent months, the likes of Deepak Hooda and Arshdeep Singh might not have got a lot of chances. However, they are now a crucial part of the squad.
