Back when IPL began, it was Deccan Chargers who represented the city of Hyderabad in the competition. At the start of the first season, owing to the blockbuster set of players that they had, many felt the Chargers would be a powerful team in the tournament. However, it was not to be. The squad hardly won anything in the first season and had to finish at the bottom of the table.
However, in 2009, Deccan Chargers had a different story to tell. Not only did the team do well, but they also went all the way to lift the trophy in South Africa. In this article, we talk about what the players who were part of that XI are doing at the moment.
Adam Gilchrist
Adam Gilchrist is the captain of the XI that won the IPL in 2009. With the bat too, Gilly was exquisite for the franchise. After his stint at Hyderabad, the Aussie played for Kings XI Punjab and then retired from the game. Currently, he works as an expert and a commentator on television.
Herschelle Gibbs
A terrific fielder and an aggressive batsman, Herschelle Gibbs was selected as the coach of Karachi Kings in PSL recently. After his retirement, the South African coached various teams. He is also vocal on his social media handles.
Tirumalasetti Suman
T Suman was one of the best-uncapped cricketers in 2009. He also played for Mumbai Indians a few seasons later. At the moment, Suman is away from the game and often involves topics related to Hyderabad Cricket.
Andrew Symonds
Andrew Symonds played for Mumbai Indians after his stint with the Chargers. Now, the former Aussie all-rounder works as a commentator in his home nation. The player was also seen in Bigg Boss and participates in exhibition tournaments.
Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma was an inexperienced player then, but now, he is the most successful cricketer in the competition. The ‘Hitman’ is also one of the best limited-overs batsmen on the planet. Rohit plays for and captains the Mumbai Indians in IPL. He is the designated opener for Team India across formats.
Venugopal Rao
Venugopal Rao played for India and was a crucial part of the Chargers’ squad. Although he was part of IPL after that season, he had very little to contribute. He joined the Jana Sena political party and now holds an administrative role in ACA. The batsman also does commentatory in Telugu.
Azhar Bilakhia
Azhar Bilakhia had a difficult career. After winning the IPL, he never found form and eventually lost his place. At the age of 24, he announced retirement and entered the family business.
Ryan Harris
Ryan Harris has held a position in the backroom staffs of multiple squads. His most recent assignment was with the Delhi Capitals in IPL 2020. The pacer has also worked with Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League.
Pragyan Ojha
Pragyan Ojha had a good time with Deccan Chargers. He recently was part of the Road Safety World series and also does commentatory. Pragyan also holds a place in the IPL governing council.
Harmeet Singh
A very good pacer, Harmeet Singh lost his way in his career due to inconsistent form. In one of his latest interviews, the player revealed that he is working as an Inspector of GST and Customs in Chandigarh. He also represents the cricket squad of that unit.
RP Singh
RP Singh was the best pacer for DC that season. The left-hander then played for multiple franchises in IPL. After retirement, RP has taken the role of a Hindi commentator and provides his expert opinions on TV.
