Angelo Mathews considering retirement from international cricket – Reports

Just a few days before India vs Sri Lanka series, experienced Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews has made a big decision. As per Newswire.lk, the all-rounder has informed Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) that he is considering retirement from all forms of international cricket.

The Sri Lankan cricket team is currently in one of its worst phases ever. The team management has decided to sideline the experienced players. They have entrusted the young players with the responsibilities. However, the youngsters have not been able to perform well.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) appointed Kusal Perera as the vice-captain. Kusal Mendis was named his deputy. However, under Perera’s captaincy, the Sri Lankan side lost the ODI series against Bangladesh. Recently, the islanders visited the United Kingdom, where England blanked them 3-0 in the T20I series. Subsequently, Sri Lanka lost the ODI series by the scoreline of 0-2.

The fact that former T20 World Cup winners Sri Lanka will have to play the qualifying round of the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 shows how far the team has fallen. One of the main reasons why Sri Lanka has not been doing well is that the legends of their team have retired. Also, the contract status of players is unclear. They have a dispute with the board.

Angelo Mathews could follow in the footsteps of Thisara Perera

Recently, Sri Lankan all-rounder Thisara Perera decided to call it a day on his international career. Perera is playing in the T20 leagues across the world. It seems Angelo Mathews could also follow him in the same direction. This will be a big loss for the Sri Lankan cricket team.

For the record, Angelo Mathews has played 90 Tests, 218 ODIs and 78 T20Is for Sri Lanka. He has aggregated over 5,000 runs in both Tests and ODIs. Besides, Mathews also has the experience of captaincy. Hence, his retirement could leave a huge hole in Sri Lankan cricket.
