The current edition of the ICC review podcast has an interview with former India captain Virat Kohli, in which he discusses his friendship with MS Dhoni. Kohli, who has replaced Dhoni as captain of the Indian team across all forms, has spoken about the particular bond he has with his predecessor, MS Dhoni.
The Indian batter recalled their history together all the way back to their World Cup victory in 2011.
According to Kohli, a key component of the strength of his friendship with Dhoni was their mutual trust. He gave an example of them batting together and playing the ball through the gap without calling for runs to illustrate his point.
India’s leadership change from Dhoni to Kohli occurred at a critical period. Dhoni missed the first Test match of India’s 2014 tour of Australia due to injury, and he ultimately decided to retire after the Boxing Day Test match. There were rumours of discord among the Indian team after they had already lost the series 0-2.
According to Kohli, the leadership change was smooth, and their friendship blossomed in areas other than cricket throughout the second part of MS’s career.
Kohli added that it is a blessing for him to have such a special bond with MS Dhoni. He said that when he was down, Dhoni was the only one who called him. They both share a good mutual respect.
We have seen the bond between them on the field a lot of times be it in the India colours or during the IPL. Long may this continue!
Virat Kohli said “The bond & relationship with MS Dhoni is a blessing for me, he is the only one genuinely reached out to me – someone who is senior to me and the mutual respect is fantastic”.
