Rudi Koertzen, a popular umpire in world cricket, breathed his last after being involved in a car crash. Several members of the cricket community around the world poured tributes to the fine servant of the game. Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag was also one of them. In this article, we take a look as Virender Sehwag shares an emotional story after the death of Rudi Koertzen in a car crash.
The South African dies in a car crash
Rudi had been to Cape Town and was returning back home with a few of his friends. Unfortunately, there was a collision in Riversdale and he died on impact. Three other people also lost their lives in the incident.
Speaking to Algoa FM News, Rudi Koertzen’s son said, “He went on a golf tournament with some of his friends, and they were expected to come back on Monday, but it seems they decided to play another round of golf.”
The South African was a brilliant umpire during his time. He was part of many important games when he was part of the profession. In all, he umpired a total of 331 international games, across all formats. In 2010, he announced his retirement from umpiring. Rudi was known for his pin-point decisions and he also became popular for the unique manner in which he slowly lifted his index finger while giving out to a batter. The cricket world will dearly miss the former umpire.

Vale Rudi Koertzen ! Om Shanti. Condolences to his family.
Had a great relation with him. Whenever I used to play a rash shot, he used to scold me saying, “Play sensibly, I want to watch your batting”.
