“I am not a power hitter, but I still end up with good strike rate,” says Jemimah Rodrigues after match winning fifty against Barbados in Commonwealth games

India needed to beat Barbados to qualify to the semi-final round of Commonwealth games and they did it comfortably

The young Indian batter Jemimah Rodrigues, who scored a crucial half-century for India in yesterday’s must-win encounter against Barbados in the Commonwealth games 2022, has said that she has been able to understand her game better in recent times and she is now not trying to play in a way which doesn’t suit her naturally.

Jemimah was in a conversation with her teammates Deepti Sharma and Renuka Singh Thakur, the other two players apart from her who also played key roles in India’s huge triumph over Barbados. The video of the conversation was shared by the official women’s cricket handle of BCCI on Twitter.

Talking about her knock of 56 runs off 46 balls, Jemimah said that she is someone who doesn’t really look to play the power shots all the time. Although she has tried to ensure in the nets that she is able to generate power when she wants, she is well aware of the fact that her natural game is to place the ball in the gaps and that’s what she is looking to do more often now.

Smriti Mandhana told me not to emulate anyone: Jemimah Rodrigues

Recalling a conversation with the Indian vice-captain Smriti Mandhana during the women’s T20 challenge a couple of years ago, Jemimah revealed that Mandhana told her that she must not look to bat like someone else, she should always look to bat like herself and in a way that suits her game. There is no point emulating some other player whose natural game is completely different.

Jemimah also said that the team management has made her role clear to her and she was already conveyed by the head coach a day before the game against Barbados that she should be prepared to bat at no. 3, as the opportunity to bat at the top of the order might be given to her.

I write a bit on cricket and I am more interested in technical and tactical side of the game, rather than bravado.
