Ricky Ponting picks the player who could win Australia the 2022 T20 World Cup

The conversation in world cricket at the moment is the T20 World Cup later this year. It will be held in Australia and it will be the hosts who will be defending the title. There have been multiple views of Australia’s squad for the event. In one of the recent interviews, Ricky Ponting named the player who could win Australia the 2022 T20 World Cup.

A player who could win Australia the 2022 T20 World Cup

Ricky Ponting said that he feels Tim David can win the World Cup for Australia if picked. Having represented Singapore, David is eligible to play for Australia because he has grown up there. David publicly has also expressed his desire to play for the Aussies. However, there is no development in that regard, so far.

Speaking to ESPN Cricinfo, the former Aussie skipper opined, “If I was a selector, I would love to have someone like that in my team. If he’s playing or not, just to have that sort of striking power ability around, he’s an out-and-out match-winner.”

Ponting continued, “He’s the sort of player that could actually win you a World Cup. He’s not just the average run-of-the-mill guy that might just sneak into a squad. I mean, he actually reminds me a bit of someone like Andrew Symonds back in the 2003 World Cup.”

He added, “You know if you get them in and you give him an opportunity they’re a chance of winning a tournament for you. That’s how I’d be looking at him right now. I know there are some other great world-quality players in the middle order for Australia. But probably none of them boasts the resume as good as Tim’s over the last two years.”

Australia will be one of the favorites for the trophy

Australia has the core of the squad from the previous edition. All the players are still active and will most likely be part of the event again later this year.

That said, there are still a few issues for the team. While skipper Aaron Finch is not in great form, Steve Smith looks to be playing very low in the batting order. There is also the case of Mitchell Starc leaking too many runs in recent months. If these problems can be fixed, Australia can go on and defend the title.
