As per reports, KL Rahul is set to bat in the middle-order in IPL 2024. The acquisition of Devdutt Padikkal now makes sense. However, the team might have to buy one more backup opener to provide an extra option. This option has to be a right-hand batter. On that note, here, we take a look at three openers LSG could target if KL Rahul bats in the middle-order.
1) Steve Smith
Steve Smith will be a useful signing for LSG. While he opens the batting in T20s now, as we all know, Steve Smith is also capable of doing the role at No.3 or even No.4.
LSG needs some experience in the batting department. With Justin Langer coming on board as the new Head Coach, it would not be a surprise if the team targets a few Australian cricketers. Steve Smith makes sense for the outfit, especially because he plays spin well.
2) Kusal Mendis
Kusal Mendis would be a positive signing for LSG. He would be a more direct backup for Quinton de Kock. The Sri Lankan cricketer also deserves a gig in the IPL.
Kusal is an aggressive batter and does well in the powerplay and outside it. If LSG needs a left-right combination, it is good to have an option in the squad. Also, he would be a backup for the likes of Marcus Stoinis and Nicholas Pooran, as well.
3) Rohan Kunnummal
Rohan Kunnummal is one of the openers LSG could target if KL Rahul bats in the middle-order. One of the rising young openers in India is Rohan Kunnummal from Kerala. He is an aggressive cricketer and has decent experience at the domestic level.
LSG might need a domestic option as a backup for Devdutt Padikkal. Hence, Rohan is on the list. Teams such as Delhi Capitals could also target the cricketer.
