While the Indian cricket team is in West Indies right now and they are there only for white ball cricket, their position in the World Test Championship (WTC) points table has changed because of Pakistan’s huge defeat against Sri Lanka in Galle earlier today.
Before the second test match between Pakistan and Sri Lanka started in Galle, Pakistan had occupied the third position in the WTC table, while Sri Lanka and India were at no. 4 and no. 5 respectively. But, with a victory over Pakistan, Sri Lanka has now increased the percentage of points that they have won out of the total no. of points available to 53.33.
India’s percentage of points after they suffered a 6-wicket loss against England at Birmingham had slipped down to 52.08. Pakistan was ahead of both India and Sri Lanka before this second Galle test began, but now because of the defeat in Galle, their percentage of points is only 51.85, which has resulted in them getting down to no. 5 position in the WTC table.

As things stand right now, South Africa and Australia are the top 2 in the World Test Championship standings with their percentage of points being 71.43 and 70 respectively, but Sri Lanka, India, and Pakistan are still in the race to make it to the final of WTC, which will be held next year, once again at Lord’s where the last WTC final was held.
Both India and Pakistan have to play two more test series in the current WTC cycle. While Pakistan has to play both series at home, India has to play one at home and one away. The one away series that India has to play is in Bangladesh and the conditions there won’t be too unfamiliar for the Indian players. India’s home series will be the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (WTC) against Australia next year.
Pakistan will have to win the next two test series at home to remain in World Test Championship final race
Pakistan has to play against two formidable opponents, New Zealand and England, at home and although they would be favorites playing in their backyard, they can’t afford to drop their guard and lose a couple of more test matches, if they have to remain in the race for World Test Championship final.

India might also face a stiff challenge from Australia in BGT next year, but currently, India has gone ahead of Pakistan in WTC standings.
