Team India, on Wednesday, March 16, put up a poor showing in their Women’s World Cup 2022 match against England at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui. The Women in Blue were shot out for 134 in 36.2 overs after being sent in to bat first. Anya Shrubsole, who broke India’s backbone in the 2017 World Cup final at the Lord’s, made early inroads into their batting order.
Shrubsole got rid of Yastika Bhatia to strike first blood after which the pacer accounted for India skipper Mithali Raj’s wicket. Deepti Sharma played 10 balls without getting off the mark before Kate Cross ran her out. The onus was then on Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur, who both scored tons against the West Indies, to bail India out of the precarious position.
Charlotte Dean pushes India back
From there on, off-spinner Charlotte Dean took over and didn’t allow the Indians to get any sort of momentum. In the 17th over, the 21-year-old removed Kaur after which she pinned Sneh Rana. Inside their first 20 overs, India lost half their side and looked in dire straits. Mandhana looked determined to put her head down and take her team to a respectable score.
But Sophie Ecclestone removed her to put more pressure on the Indian batting. Mandhana scored 35 with four fours before getting out to a sweep shot. Ecclestone, in the meantime, has been outstanding for England, especially in the last three games. Pooja Vastrakar used the DRS to good effect after she was given out, but in the same over, Dean sent her back.
Dean was the pick of the England bowlers as she finished with figures of 8.2-1-23-4. Richa Ghosh and Jhulan Goswami tried to restore sanity with a 37-run stand for the eighth wicket. Ghosh was looking good on 33 before she was run out. Goswami also churned out some lusty blows and scored 20 after which she fell prey to Cross.
India’s innings came to an end after Dean cleaned up Meghna Singh in the second ball of the 37th over. Katherine Brunt and Nat Sciver didn’t get a wicket for England, but kept things tight against India in the World Cup match.
Here’s how the netizens reacted to Team India getting bowled out in the World Cup 2022 game
Epic implosion against England.
India still have to face Australia and South Africa.#CWC22— Annesha Ghosh (@ghosh_annesha) March 16, 2022
Totally unacceptable batting performance by #TeamIndia in a crucial #CWC22 game.. going to hurt their NRR badly as well making it even more tougher with just 4/7 wins. possible exit before SF? #EngvInd #indvEng #indvsEng #TeamEngland

Look no shade, honestly.

India will look back on that batting performance with a huge deal of disappointment. They are a much better team than that. Today was a bit of a collective brain fade.
Expect lots of spin early in this defence. #ENGvIND #CWC22 #SpinToWin

#ENGvIND India is totally dependent on 2-3 players . If they play well India score otherwise gets bundled

Very disappointing batting performance from India. @Vastrakarp25 ‘s wicket especially was so frustrating! Deepti and Richa’s wickets were gifts as well. Need to tighten up a lot for the rest of the games #indwvengw #CWC22 #WomensCricket #ENGvIND

In a crunch match, the Indian top order comes apart. Had we won, England would have been knocked out and our semi final almost confirmed. Very disappointing to watch such an abject performance.#ICCWomensWorldCup2022

Every time @BCCIWomen plays against a good team like Australia, New Zealand and England they loose and loose big. The match against NZ was a no contest, England has made a mockery of Indian batting next is Australia. I don't see this going well for @BCCIWomen #ENGvIND #CWC22
