Indian captain Rohit Sharma on the verge of creating world record in T20I cricket

Rohit Sharma is currently the third highest run scorer in T20 international cricket behind Martin Guptill and Virat Kohli

The Indian T20I captain Rohit Sharma is on the verge of becoming the highest run-scorer ever in the history of T20I cricket as he is just 44 runs away from the runs’ tally of the New Zealand opener Martin Guptill who currently holds the top position with 3299 runs in 112 T20Is.

Rohit Sharma has played 121 T20I matches for India so far and has scored, 3256 runs at an average of 33 and at a strike rate of 140. He is also the only player in the history of the game who has scored 4 hundreds in T20 international cricket so far. No other Indian player has scored more than one T20 international hundred.

The former Indian captain Virat Kohli might also have broken Guptill’s record if he was playing in the third T20I against West Indies today as he is only 2 runs away from Guptill’s tally, but he has now been rested and will join the Indian camp only before the test series against Sri Lanka starting on 4th of March.

Rohit Sharma has enough games in hand to break Martin Guptill’s record

Rohit Sharma will play the next 4 T20I games, one against West Indies and three against Sri Lanka, and will have ample opportunities to go past Martin Guptill before Virat Kohli does. Rohit, since his comeback from injury, has looked in sublime form with the bat and has already played a couple of brisk cameos at the top of the order.

With Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant being rested for the third T20I against West Indies and the series against Sri Lanka, Ruturaj Gaikwad might be included in the playing XI of India for the next few T20I games. In case it happens, it will be interesting to see if Rohit Sharma still opens the batting or he drops down the order and allows Ruturaj and Ishan Kishan to open the batting.

Since the time Rohit has become the permanent T20 captain of India after the resignation of Virat Kohli, India has played 5 T20Is and has won all of them quite convincingly. Rohit has not just led the team brilliantly in these 5 games, but has contributed immensely with the bat too, at the top of the order.
