Shreyas Iyer Breaks Virat Kohli’s Record After His Brilliant Display Against Sri Lanka

One player who has been making the right noise in recent weeks is Shreyas Iyer. After the injury last year, things had not been going well for him. However, after continuous impressive performances in all three formats, he is back to his best. After the brilliant show against Sri Lanka, Shreyas Iyer breaks Virat Kohli‘s record that he had held from 2016. We take a look at the record in this article.

A solid show with the bat

With Virat Kohli rested, it was curious to know who would take up his No.3 role against Sri Lanka in the T20I series. It was Shreyas Iyer who donned the responsibility. The Mumbai cricketer was in top form as he registered scores of 57(28)*, 74(44)* and 73(45)*. While he was the aggressor at the death in the first game, he helped India chase down tricky totals in the next two encounters. Interestingly, Iyer remained not out in all these three games.

Although everyone knew Shreyas Iyer’s ability as an anchor, not many were confident of his approach and power-hitting skills. However, he ticked both these boxes in the recent series. Now, it will be a selection headache for the management after the full-strength team gets selected.

Shreyas Iyer breaks Virat Kohli’s record

Till now, Virat Kohli held the record for scoring the most runs in a T20I series. Back in 2016 when India visited Australia, Virat registered scores of 90(55)*, 59(33)* and 50(36) to score a combined total of 199 runs. This was the highest record by an Indian so far. Even the second position was so far held by Virat Kohli. He had scored 183 runs in 2019 against West Indies at home.

Now courtesy of his brilliant show against Sri Lanka, Iyer has taken the No.1 spot. Hence, he is the first Indian to score 200+ runs in a three-match T20I series. It will a confidence boost for a cricketer who had been struggling just a few months ago.
