Ajinkya Rahane took charge of the Indian team in the 2020-21 Border Gavaskar Trophy after Virat Kohli left Australia to attend the birth of his child. The visitors didn’t feel Kohli’s absence as Rahane led them to a thumping eight-wicket win in the second Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. India drew level in the series after the Ashes debacle.
During this while, a small controversy regarding the game has come to the fore. Ravi Ashwin, who was part of the MCG Test, said that it was then head coach Ravi Shastri’s idea to introduce him into the attack early. Ashwin reckoned that the pitch was damp and would help him to some extent.
The tweaker got rid of a well-set Marnus Labuschagne with a delivery that turned a mile. Ashwin, who has 400 plus wickets in Test cricket, put forth the revelation while speaking on his official YouTube channel.
Not my nature to go and take credit: Ajinkya Rahane
Later, Rahane, India’s former Test vice-captain, hinted that bringing Ashwin into the attack was his idea. Rahane didn’t mince any words while putting forth his views on the development that took place more than a year ago.
“I know what I’ve done there. I don’t need to tell anyone. That’s not my nature to go and take credit. Yes, there were some things that I took the decisions on the field or in the dressing room but someone else took the credit for it,” Rahane was quoted as saying to journalist Boria Majumdar.
Rahane has been fighting for form in recent times in the purest format of the game. The veteran scored a stupendous century in the Melbourne Test and got the Player of the Match award. Under his leadership, India also retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy by winning the Test series 2-1.
India won the Gabba Test by three wickets with most of their senor players missing out due to various reasons. In the end, Rishabh Pant’s heroics took them over the finishing line.
In the meantime, the fans are a tad bemused by the comments Rahane shared on the Melbourne Test saga. The netizens on social media platforms also put in their views on the matter.
Here’s how the netizens reacted to Ajinkya Rahane’s comments
A man who was, sometimes ago touted as an impeccable leader, is showing signs of being absolutely insecure and jittery! All this because he senses he hasn't performed well and could well be gauged on the basis of runs than the good boy image that he carries. #AjinkyaRahane https://t.co/CFVNadQ74t

Truth revealed. #AjinkyaRahane deserves 200% credit for the turnaround. What a cap. Took over when team was down & out. 36 all out. Can't get worse. He rises, takes team along and we win the series. Awesome
