World cup winner Jos Buttler, a star of the Indian Premier League and a dynamic white ball wicket-keeper batsman was appointed as the captain of England in limited over International when Eoin Morgan took retirement from the sport. Buttler thinks the captaincy could spell the end of his Test career.
Being the vice-captain to Morgan, Buttler was everyone’s favourite for the captaincy stint. A batting stalwart, who has 4,120 runs from 151 ODIs has hit 10 hundreds in the 50-over game format. With his power and fierce hitting while opening the innings, the 31-year-old wk-batsman has thrashed almost every delivery being bowled to him over the boundary line. Nevertheless, he has not had much success in the longest format of the game.
Jos Buttler’s Test career-
Buttler last played a Test match in the Ashes series where England lost to Australia by an insulting 0-4. He wasn’t included in the Test squad named for the New Zealand and the rescheduled fifth Test against India. Buttler’s red ball career hasn’t been much impressive as he has only hit two hundreds from 57 games.
“Certainly being captain of the white-ball team is my number one priority. I’m very focused and really excited for the challenge that lies ahead,” Buttler told reporters. “I think it’s going to be a really big challenge and one that needs my full-time attention. Talking about the Test stuff might be a question that never has to be answered unless someone wants to pick me for the team, which hasn’t been the case. It’s quite obvious at the minute I was left out on merit and rightfully so. I had a poor Ashes series and I’m not part of the team at the moment. The team is playing fantastically well, so it doesn’t look like a team that needs people” he added.
Buttler’s major challenge as the captain will be the upcoming T20 WC and also the ODI CWC 2023. Undoubtedly, he is one of the best openers of the game in the shortest format. He recently won the orange cap in the IPL as he scored most runs in the tournament, including 4 hundreds. His batting ability is never questioned in the LOIs but for sure, his captaincy will be under tight scrutiny.
