The captaincy discussion is the hot topic in the country right now. A few days ago, BCCI announced that Rohit Sharma would take over the ODI captaincy duties from Virat Kohli. With this, Rohit is now India’s captain in the white-ball formats. In this article, we take a look at the snippets of a recent interview in which BCCI President Sourav Ganguly talks about Rohit Sharma’s captaincy.
Ganguly talks about Rohit Sharma’s captaincy
Virat Kohli had quit T20I captaincy duties and as expected, it was Rohit Sharma who replaced him. However, Virat had mentioned that he would want to continue captaining the ODI and Test team. BCCI, though, did not buy into the theory of split-captaincy in white-ball formats and hence, handed over the task of ODIs to Rohit Sharma. Recently, Sourav Ganguly gave his views about Rohit’s capability as a skipper.
Speaking to News18, the former Indian skipper said, “Rohit Sharma’s record for MI is phenomenal. He captained India in Asia Cup, which India won without Virat. To win a title without Virat spoke volumes of that team’s strength. He’ll find a way to do well, and I hope he does”.
A crucial few months for Team India
There appears to be turmoil within Team India and at the moment, it seems to have hit its peak. However, the squad has a few important assignments in the next few years. While the World Test Championship cycle is on, India must also prepare for the 2022 T20 World Cup and the 50-over World Cup in 2023. The latter event will take place at home in India. Team India also has a relatively newer coach at the helm of affairs. Also, it is after a long time that India has had split captains. Hence, with so much at stake, it is important that the new era of Indian cricket starts in the right manner.
