4 Costliest release made in IPL history

The Indian Premier League has been a perfect platform for the players to express themselves and showcase their mettle at the highest level. They slowly become part of the team’s DNA by going about their business.

The fans connect with the players by rooting for them throughout the season. However, at times, the franchises had made big mistakes by not retaining them in the auction when it mattered the most.

While some franchises don’t regret releasing the players, those decisions did backfire on them in the first place. Now, in this article, let’s learn more about the four costliest releases made in IPL history.

1. Chris Gayle

Chris Gayle is one of the biggest names in the T20 cricket fraternity. The Universe Boss is the best player in the T20 format and his records speak huge volumes of how he dominated the proceedings.

He represented multiple IPL teams such as Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings). His last IPL stint came at Punjab Kings in IPL 2021 but the franchise made a big mistake by releasing him. Since then, Gayle didn’t play in the IPL.

2. Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill is currently the best young-performing player in the world. The right-handed batsman initially played for Kolkata Knight Riders, which was the start of his IPL career. He represented KKR for three seasons before he was released by the franchise. He currently plays for GT in the IPL.

3. Faf du Plessis

Faf du Plessis is one of the costliest releases made by Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. The CSK team management didn’t retain the most experienced player ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction. RCB signed him and made him the captain.

4. Gautam Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir was released by Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2018 mega auction. Gambhir first joined KKR in 2011 and led the team for seven years. KKR won the title twice in 2012 and 2014. Since then, they didn’t win any titles.
