The 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 auction kept everyone on their toes. The two-day extravaganza on February 12 and 13 in Bangalore turned out to be an exciting one. A number of players, both capped and uncapped, went under the hammer.
The focus was on plenty of big players, who were expected to run away with massive deals. But for a few cricketers, that wasn’t quite a the case. They earned much lesser amounts, and some of them couldn’t even cross their base prices.
In the article, let’s take a look at 5 underpriced players in the IPL 2022 mega auction
1. David Warner
David Warner came into the IPL auction after becoming the Player of the Tournament in the T20 World Cup 2021. The left-hander is also the leading run-scorer among foreigners in the history of the IPL. Warner was a stalwart for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for as many as seven seasons.
Not only did he win quite a few Orange Caps, but he also captained the Orange Army to their maiden title in 2016. But with a base price of INR 2 crores, Warner fetched only INR 6.25. In the last four seasons for the SRH franchise, he earned INR 12.5 crores.
2. Devon Conway
Devon Conway has made an incredible start to his T20 career for New Zealand. In only 17 innings, the left-handed batter has notched 602 runs with four half-centuries. He also notched a top score of an unbeaten 99 against Australia in Christchurch in February 2021.
He also got another unbeaten score in the 90s against Bangladesh in Hamilton. In the IPL auction, Conway registered at a base price of INR 1 crore and he was expected to trigger a bidding war. But it was Chennai Super Kings (CSK), who brought him to a base price of INR 1 crore.
3. Rassie van der Dussen
Rassie van der Dussen has been a reliable batter for South Africa in the middle order. In 34 T20Is, the right-handed batter has notched 933 runs, with six half-centuries. The 33-year-old van der Dussen, can change gears as per needs of the hour.
In 140 T20s, he has scored, 4129 runs with three centuries and 28 half-centuries. The veteran registered himself at a base price of INR 1 crore in the IPL mega auction, and he didn’t find many bidders. Only Rajasthan Royals (RR) bid for him and begged him at his base price.
4. Daryl Mitchell
Daryl Mitchell is a destructive all-round cricketer, although he doesn’t have a whole lot of international experience. In 25 T20Is, the right-handed batter has scored 392 runs at an average of 21.77 and a strike rate of 134.70 with a top score of an unbeaten 72.
His top score came in the semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2021 against England back in November. Mitchell registered in the IPL mega auction at a base price of INR 75 lakhs, and the Royals bagged him at his base price. Not to forget that Mitchell has 59 T20 wickets to his name.
5. Maheesh Theekshana
Maheesh Theekshana doesn’t have a lot of experience at top-level cricket at the age of 21. But the tweaker has the guile to bamboozle the best of batters. He was at his very best when Sri Lanka played in the T20 World Cup in Oman and the UAE.
Thereafter, he performed to expectations for the Jaffna Kings in the 2022 Lanka Premier League. Theekshana has done well even in the ongoing T20Is against Australia. From a base price of INR 50 lakhs, the spinner could only earn INR 70 lakhs from the Chennai Super Kings.
